Instagram Tightens Rules on AI Influencers Who Pretend to Be Human

The company said last Saturday that any account using an AI-generated persona must now add a new tag: “AI-generated profile.” Skip it and your reach gets slashed. Posts won’t show up in Reels or Explore, the two fastest ways to pick up new followers on the platform.

The rule replaces the older, vaguer “AI creator” label. This one’s personal. If the face behind the account is entirely artificial, the tag is now mandatory.

Reports from The Guardian and The New York Times helped push this. They found hundreds of -> bright-eyed AI doctors, brand reps and wellness gurus, some racking up six-figure audiences while promoting real products. Users kept stumbling onto profiles and only later realized they weren’t speaking to a person. Instagram’s own statement put it plainly: people “want to know when a profile features an AI-generated person.”

The carve-out: if you’re human and just using AI to splash color or insert a sunset behind you, relax. Thomas Ricker at The Verge confirmed this only targets accounts where the entire identity is synthetic. Example: an avatar created top to bottom in Midjourney and fabricated life updates.

Enforcement runs on self-reporting. The first warning shows up in Account Status, and creators can protest if they think Instagram misfiled them. Add the label, reach stays put. Don’t, your ability to find new eyes drops to almost zero until you comply or win the appeal.

So platforms are feeling their way through the same tightrope. AI bans might spur legal minefields, outright abandonment becomes ghost town and carrots or cheese whichever higher Offered Innovation Olusayo Kuti put it this way: the really good fakes now hold down jobs, hobbies, twice-daily workout posts, but transparency keeps the floor from dropping out under users.

For brands, this flips the script. Before inking a deal, edifices will need to check a box they probably didn’t think to ask: is this influencer even human?

The experiment under way is whether honesty can keep pace with invention.
