Google pushed Android 17 QPR2 Beta 4 to Pixel owners on Friday. The release also reaches Platform Stability, which means Google has now locked the API surface. Developers can finish their app updates against API Level 37.2 before the stable release in December.
The Pixel 11 series does not support this build yet. Google says support will arrive “soon.”
Voice Broadcast Gets a Quick Settings Tile
Beta 4 focuses more on fixes than major new features. The biggest user-facing change is likely the new Quick Settings tile for Voice Broadcast.
Google previously kept the feature inside Developer Options. Now, users can access it directly from Quick Settings. The feature uses Auracast technology to broadcast voice or media over a private Bluetooth LE channel.
Users can also password-protect the stream or leave it open. This makes Voice Broadcast easier to access without requiring developer settings.
New Status Bar Customization Options
The update also adds new customization options under Settings > System > Status Bar.
Users can now hide the mute or vibrate icons. They can also choose whether the status bar shows only high-priority notifications or all notifications.
These changes are relatively small, but they give Pixel users more control over the status bar.
Updated Kernel for Pixel 8, 9 and 10
Beta 4 also brings an updated kernel to the Pixel 8, Pixel 9, and Pixel 10 series.
The kernel changes could improve battery life and performance. However, Google has not provided many details about these improvements in its official notes.
Android 17 QPR2 Beta 4 Bug Fixes
Most of the update focuses on fixing existing problems. Reporters identified 16 patches in Google’s changelog.
The fixes address several issues, including:
- A thermal issue that could cause phones to overheat and reboot unexpectedly.
- A launcher search field that sometimes ignored typed input.
- Bluetooth calls that routed audio through the phone instead of a connected earpiece.
- USB-C screen mirroring problems.
- Gesture navigation that could become unresponsive.
- Face Unlock fallback errors.
- WebGL crashes linked to a PowerVR GPU driver issue.
These fixes make Beta 4 more focused on reliability than new features.
New Security Protection Against USSD Fraud
Google also added new security restrictions to prevent programmatic USSD call-forwarding tricks.
Attackers can use these tricks to redirect calls and potentially facilitate fraud. The new restrictions add another layer of protection against this type of abuse.
Platform Stability Is Now Locked
For developers, Platform Stability is one of the most important parts of this release.
Google has now finalized the APIs for Android 17 QPR2. Developers can therefore complete their testing and prepare their apps for the final release without expecting major API changes.
Supported Pixel Devices
Android 17 QPR2 Beta 4 supports Pixel devices from the Pixel 6a through the Pixel 10 series. The update also supports the Pixel Tablet and Pixel Fold.
The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro do not receive Beta 4 because Google ended their support with QPR1.
The Pixel 11 series also skips this build for now. Google says support will come soon.

Users can install the update through the Android Beta Program and receive it as an OTA update.
Google also provides system images for users who prefer manual installation.
